FAQ
By Editor Alexandra Wolfe
FICTION
» I want to submit a short story. What do I do?
Please read the Submissions Guidelines.
» Do you accept e-mail submissions?
Yes. Check the Submissions Guidelines for more information.
» How much do you pay for short stories?
We are not, at this time, a paying market.
» What are your response times?
We try to make an initial response to all submissions within 48 hours of receipt. But it can take us anywhere between 2 to 3 weeks to read and assess your submission. If, however, you have not received a response from us within that timeframe, please e-mail the Editor at: EDITOR.
» Will you archive my story?
It is our intention to keep an indefinite archive of all short stories published (just as a paper journal archived in a national library would remain available permanently); however, if an author makes a written request to have a particular story to which they own the copyright removed, we will, of course, comply. We are unable, however, to remove any story published in any PDF magazine or anthologies that may be made available online.
» Do you accept reprints?
Please query us before submitting a previously published story.
ARTICLES/FEATURES/ESSAYS
» I want to submit an article. What do I do?
Write to us outlining what your article (feature or essay) is about. Ideally your article should be between 800-12,000 words in length.
Ensure your subject line reads: SUBMISSION/ARTICLE (FEATURE).
Send your e-mail to the: EDITOR.
BOOK REVIEWS
» I want to submit a book review of mine. What do I do?
First of all, check the title hasn’t already been reviewed. If we think you have written a fair and balanced review conforming to our standards, we will then post it up on the web site with full copyright to you.
MAKE SURE:
• Your review is original, and not previously published.
• You should keep the plot summer to no more than 1-2 paragraphs by way of introduction.
• Be concise and give reason as to why you liked/disliked the book. How well written was it, did the characters engage you, how credible was the plot and was this a thoroughly enjoyable story, or not, and to what degree?
• Ensure your subject line reads: SUBMISSION/REVIEW.
• Send your review to the: EDITOR.
NOVELS FOR REVIEW
» Can I send you a copy of my novel for review?
Yes, definitely. You can email us for details of where to send the ARC or galleys. You should note that receipt of an ARC for review does not ensure a favorable review, just an honest well-balanced one.
It should be noted that we do not accept ebooks (electronic) or self-published books.
COPYRIGHT
» Who owns the copyright of work featured at Kissed By Venus?
The author of a work retains copyright in the work at all times, having only granted Kissed By Venus permission to publish said works on this web site for a period of not less than three months.
» Know Your Rights
There is a great deal of misconception about “copyright” and who holds it, and the granting of “rights” or a “licence” by an author or artist, to a publisher, whether in print, online or otherwise.
Copyright refers to your right, as an author, to claim ownership of a particular piece of “intellectual property.” It also means that no one else can reproduce that work, sell it, or distribute it without your permission.
You, as the author, however, can grant permission through “use rights.” It should be stated that licensing a “use right” to a publisher does not affect your ownership of the copyright itself, unless you decide to license away “all rights” to a publisher.
Publishers commonly ask for:
• First North American Serial Rights (FNASR)
• First Rights
• One-Time Rights
• Electronic Rights
• Second Rights or Reprint Rights
• All Rights
Be sure you know which rights are being asked for, and for what period of time.
Kissed By Venus is a web site for the discussion and promotion of lesbian literature. We publish lesbian fiction, articles, book reviews, and interviews.
